Stock Hall in Forest Kasten

The rural buildings of the forestry office are located in the Kasten Forest, a closed forest area in the south of Munich. The new storage and parking hall complements the ensemble as a spatial conclusion to the landscape.

Project description

To replace the Schernthaner Hut, an open hall that was torn down, and an abandoned garage building, a new parking and storage hall was needed that could accommodate both uses in a single new building.

The new building should be located directly next to the forestry site so that unnecessary traffic within the forest can be avoided and access can be provided via the existing courtyard.

The building itself, with external dimensions of approx. 10 m wide, 15 m long and 8 m high, is defined in its structure and design by its use, with a column-free interior and wide sliding door. The use of wood as a material is based on what is available locally. The existing service buildings are characterised by their spruce wood cladding, which has now turned grey. The new building adopts the aesthetics of the existing buildings in its developed details and blends in harmoniously with a pre-greyed façade.

The bright interior contrasts with the dark exterior and is characterised by natural cross-laminated timber walls and the delicate framework of the trusses. A key feature of the supporting structure is the scissor truss of the gable roof, which rests on supports and load-bearing cross-laminated timber walls. The entire structure is left exposed. The fittings are also consciously displayed in order to emphasise the character of a machine hall on the one hand and to enable the components to be disassembled and reused elsewhere on the other.
